Who invented race in America and what did it buy them?

Gist response

Race in America had no single inventor: colonists, lawmakers, and courts gradually created rules that ranked people by ancestry and gave white people greater rights. Calling Native peoples inferior helped settlers justify taking their land, while laws targeting Black people made lifelong slavery easier to enforce. These divisions brought land, labor, wealth, and political control to powerful white landowners and helped keep poorer people from uniting against them.
