The model paragraph
John Punch’s punishment turned a shared escape into a racial division by giving Black and white servants different futures for the same act. In 1640, three servants fled their masters together and were captured together. The two white men remained under indenture, a labor arrangement with a legally limited term, despite severe additional punishment. Takaki states, “The whites each had one year added to their indentures, and in addition they were ordered to work for the colony for three more years after their indentures ended” (YPT 51). This says that the white runaways lost additional years of freedom but still had an eventual end to their service. It shows that punishment could be brutal without erasing every legal path out of bondage. However, the third man’s sentence removed that possibility. The chapter continues, “But the black runaway, John Punch, was sentenced to servitude for life” (YPT 51). This says that Punch’s compelled labor would last for his entire life. It shows that authorities used race to impose unequal consequences on men who had escaped together. John Punch, the Black member of this group of runaways, received lifelong servitude because officials assigned him a different legal status. This connects to Key Idea 2: Race is socially constructed. The court did not discover a natural difference in the men’s actions; its unequal sentences helped build a racial hierarchy in law. When authorities gave one group a possible future freedom and denied it to another, they made race consequential in workers’ lives.
