How did push and pull factors shape the migration stories of Irish, Mexican, and Chinese immigrants?

Gist response

Irish families fled famine, Chinese migrants escaped war and hardship, and later Mexican migrants fled land loss and revolutionary violence. These pressures pushed people from home, while American jobs, hoped-for earnings, and stories of opportunity pulled them toward the United States. Many Mexicans in 1848 had a different experience: they stayed home while U.S. conquest moved the national border around them.
